Trash-can project

  1. I like how you have implemented different heights for each box to show different levels of importance. I also thought it was a clever and thoughtful idea to relate the colour scheme and the form of your design to landscape architecture. It’s also nice to know that the form of your design is not restricted to just one shape, like how it can constantly be altered to your needs, allowing you to have more freedom with your new ideas.

Some areas which could have been developed more were to construct a 1:1 model of the actual box. That would have probably strengthen your concept a lot more by showing an idea on how big the box would be in context to a person's height. It would have brought out some sense of materiality of the object itself as well. Also there is a little repetition of photos in your A3 printout which could’ve been avoided, removing them would’ve made your presentation a whole lot more effective.

I thought your A3 printouts were really nicely organized and well presented. Clear photos that explained your concept thoroughly. Great job.

  3. Dian has experimented around the idea of 'random access' consistently throughout her project. The variety of programs and medias she has used is impressive. From her first mockup of large boxes holding the ideas inside, she has taken it to the next level by creating as many as 1000 boxes which stand together and that are sorted by height. The higher the box the more important the idea. This is very interesting as by arranging them in such order, the boxes give the impression of a landscape contour.

The overall process of design and the final design have been presented beautifully and hence can speak for themselves. Dians idea implements chance as the boxes can be arranged to form any shape therefore containing no restriction. It is very interesting to see primary forms used in such a unique way, after all as Aldo Rossi quotes 'Primary forms are beautiful forms'.

A full scale model would have been nice to see, and appart from that perhaps also a limitation of photographs.

  4. I like how you experimented with the first mockup to improve on the deisgn of your trash can, looking at areas of imporvement. For further development you chose to add more of a 'randomness' factor to the design by adding a landscape of boxes of which the heights corespond to the importance of the junk stored.. I thought this was aesthestically pleasing and also added the the random access that was favoured in the
ideal storage system however these boxes were still categorised into a heirachy system..
your presentation is great, repetition is used a bit but we get the idea which is good to see.. also to add as your scale is quite large it adds to the people interactiveness with the model.. the desig requires the user to walk around it to use or jump over it to walk on it. Great
